There are two ways: DIY geofilters and Custom-Designed geofilters. The choice is akin to knitting your own sweater or buying one online. If you’re a good knitter then great, if not, don’t go there!

DIY geofilters:

If you want to go the DIY route then here are the basic requirements:

  • You need some knowledge of Abode Illustrator, Photoshop or any other design programme
  • The design needs to be 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels
  • It needs to be PNG (transparent)
  • It should only cover 25% of the page
  • The file has to be smaller than 300kb

Happiness? Right then you upload the image and enter the date, time & location and proceed to checkout! There is an easier way…

Like the design of geofilters the usage is also divided into two categories, Community Geofilters and On-Demand Geofilters.

Community Geofilters: These could be for universities, public spaces, landmarks and cities. These have been around the longest and were created either by the Snapchat team or Snapchat users.  While Community geofilters are free, Snapchat has the right to accept or decline your filter, so there is no guarantee. Please be aware that no brand logos are allowed with Community geofilters.

On-Demand Geofilters: Hosting a business or personal function? You can add that razzle-dazzle and purchase on-demand-geofilters for your event. If it’s a business event you are allowed to use your company’s logo. You still however have to submit the design to Snapchat for approval, but unlike Community geofilters where the turnaround time is two to three weeks, here It’s between 24 and 48 hours.

Also it’s important to clarify that there is a difference between personal geofilters and business geofilters. The former can be used at private locations, but like community geofilters, branding and logos are not allowed. So if it’s your wedding don’t use “Just do it!”.  Do use “Bob & Jane forever”.
